Jetstar Asia will launch direct flights between Broome and Singapore on June 25, reconnecting Western Australia's north to Southeast Asia.

The carrier will offer two return flights each week until October 26.

Flights from Broome to Singapore with Silk Air were launched in 2018 but the Singapore Airlines-aligned carrier could not sustain the route.

Broome International Airport chief executive Craig Shaw said international connections to Broome as the gateway to Western Australia’s Kimberley region have been a long-held ambition for the local tourism industry and the airport.

"As well as being a game changer for the region in terms of tourism, this new regular connection can support new trade opportunities from the north-west of Australia. Connectivity is the key to prosperity and liveability for any town," Shaw added.

Broome is closely associated with the pearling industry. In the 1880s, it attracted workers from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Japan and Europe. Today many divers who perished in the search for pearls are buried in the town’s Japanese cemetery.

Pearls are still very much part of the town’s attractions with luxury retailers selling pearls fashioned with gold and silver, and local tours offering trips to the farms where the pearls are bred.
