The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed in its recent ‘Water Roadmap for Travel & Tourism’ that the global Travel & Tourism sector has significantly decreased its overall water intensity while continuing its substantial growth.
Despite its growth, the global travel industry has significantly reduced water usage. It represented 3.5% to 5.8% of global freshwater in 2021 and 2019. This marks progress toward sustainability despite agriculture and food using 70% of global water.
Recognising the urgent need for sustainable water practices, the travel industry’s water-saving efforts are crucial. With billions lacking safe water access globally, this reduction showcases responsible resource management.
The impressive reduction in water usage highlights how crucial the travel sector is in adopting sustainable practices. These actions support the global goal of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), promoting responsible water use worldwide.
