Tour operators are sounding the alarm over potential changes to visa-free travel to Japan for Thais, as concerns rise over increasing numbers of overstays.

The Department of Consular Affairs reported a significant uptick in Thai overstays from 2021 to 2023, prompting the Japanese government to urge Thailand to address the issue promptly.

While the Thai Travel Agents Association acknowledges the problem, they highlight that overstays represent a small fraction of Thailand's outbound tourism market to Japan.

Speculation arises that visa requirements might be reintroduced post-Expo 2025 in Osaka. The weak yen may deter illegal work in Japan compared to South Korea, but concerns persist about potential tourism restrictions due to overcrowding.

As discussions unfold, stakeholders emphasise the importance of addressing overstays to maintain visa-free travel privileges and sustain the positive bilateral relationship between Thailand and Japan.
