Sri Lanka has ordered the swift departure of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians residing in the country on expired extended visas due to the Ukraine conflict.

The decision, following reports of illegal activities and discriminatory practices by Russian-operated businesses, mandates the departure of these individuals within two weeks, starting 23 February.

Complaints about Russians overstaying, engaging in illegal enterprises, and establishing nightclubs led to the move.

The Tourism Ministry revealed concerns about their employment practices and non-local payment methods. However, President Wickremesinghe's office has ordered an investigation into the decision, questioning its validity without Cabinet endorsement.

While Sri Lanka sought to boost its tourism sector by allowing visa-on-arrival for 30 days, the current economic downturn has led to increased scrutiny of visa extensions.

Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, around 300,000 Russians and 20,000 Ukrainians visited Sri Lanka. The exact number currently residing on extended visas remains undisclosed.
