Myanmar is reopening commercial flights, following a closure that lasted more than two years in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the military coup in 2021.

The Yangon International Airport has reopened on 17 April to international flights. AirAsia was the first international airline to announce a new weekly flight schedule from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon from 13 May 2022.

International business travellers and tourists can now apply online for a business e-visa and tourists visa through the website www.evisa.moip.gov.mm

Fully vaccinated travelers will be required to show a negative PCR test before arrival, pre-arrange a private transfer on arrival and stay one night in hotel quarantine while awaiting the results of their in-country PCR test.

Foreign travellers are also required to purchase Myanmar health insurance that covers Covid-19 (starting from US$50 for insurance valid for 15 days). If the on-arrival test is positive, the health insurance covers the additional costs of hotel quarantine and/or hospital fees according to requirements by the health authorities for up to US$4,500.

However, cash withdrawals from ATMs in Myanmar are not possible at the moment and fewer businesses accept international credit cards. Travellers are advised to pre-arrange their trip to Myanmar through a travel agency and bring cash.
