With more countries unveiling new tourism destinations, Maldives
joins the fray, with plans to turn the Southern Maldives into a
burgeoning tourism scene.
CEO & MD of MMPRC, Fathmath Thaufeeq, addressed stakeholders at
preliminary meetings held in Addu City on 4 April 2024, hosted by South
Palm Maldives and Canareef Resort Maldives.
These discussions aimed to pave the way for the upcoming South Region
Symposium, aligning with President Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to
sustainable tourism development in the Southern Maldives.
While the Maldives is renowned worldwide for its stunning beaches and
luxury resorts, the southern atolls have historically received fewer
tourists compared to the more popular northern atolls.
Emphasising collaborations between stakeholders and authorities,
Thaufeeq underscored the importance of long-term growth for Addu City's
tourism industry.
Gan International Airport's role as a domestic hub for tourists was
highlighted, reflecting the government's holistic efforts. MMPRC aims to
significantly boost local tourism, ensuring residents benefit from the
burgeoning industry and targeting international markets.
Discussions from the meetings will include plans for a tailored
marketing strategy to promote tourism in southern provinces, including
Addu City, Gaaf Dhaal Atoll, Gaaf Alif Atoll, and Fuvamulah.
As tourism remains a key economic sector in the Maldives, Thaufeeq
expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their contributions towards
advancing tourism in the South of Maldives, ultimately benefiting the
nation and its citizens.
