As summer holidays approach, Google has unveiled new innovative
travel tools. One notable addition is the Search Generative Experience
(SGE) update, allowing users to craft travel itineraries using
artificial intelligence (AI).
Currently exclusive to US users enrolled in Search Labs, this feature
draws insights from web sources, user submissions, and reviews to
curate personalised trip plans.
Upon requesting itineraries like a “three-day historical trip to
Philadelphia”, users receive comprehensive suggestions, including
attractions, dining options, and flight and hotel details. Despite its
AI sophistication, the service currently lacks purchasing options, with
finalised itineraries exportable to Gmail, Docs, or Maps.
Google's move into AI-generated trip planning reflects its broader
experimentation with AI applications. While the feature currently avoids
advertisements, Google hints at potential future ad integrations,
recognising the data's value for targeted advertising.
Accompanying this update are enhancements to Google Maps. Users can
now access curated recommendations from both publishers and fellow
users, covering various cities and activities. Notable content partners
include The Infatuation, Lonely Planet, The New York Times, and
OpenTable. Additionally, Maps offers curated restaurant lists in over 40
US and Canadian cities.
Future updates promise increased user customisation, social media
integration, and expanded translation capabilities through the "Circle
to Search" feature on Android devices.
