Tragedy struck in Bali as heavy rain unleashed a devastating
landslide, claiming the lives of two tourists – a 47-year-old Australian
woman and a 50-year old Dutch man.
The wooden villa they occupied in Jatiluwih village succumbed to the
landslide's force in the morning on 14 March, following a night of
torrential downpour.
Officials attribute the disaster to the erosion of water canals used
for irrigation, situated above the villa. The couple were found lifeless
in their bed still in their sleeping positions.
Efforts to extract the victims from the debris ensued, with their
bodies later transferred to a hospital in Denpasar, the provincial
capital.
In certain regions of Indonesia, deforestation has exacerbated
landslides, while heavy rainfall has led to flooding in various areas.
Last week, intense rainfall on Sumatra Island resulted in landslides and
floods, claiming the lives of at least 27 individuals.
