American tourist Anthony Joseph Laurence has been permanently barred
from entering the Philippines after writing vulgar words on his e-travel
form.
The 34-year-old traveller reportedly provided false information and
used inappropriate language on his digital travel pass upon arrival at
Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on 7 November 2023.
Norman Tansingco, the Bureau of Immigration’s commissioner, confirmed
Laurence's actions, stating that Laurence entered fabricated details,
omitted his full name, included profanities in his entry, and even
hurled his passport and phone at the counter. However, Laurence denied
throwing his passport and phone at the immigration officer, claiming he
handed them over politely.
Laurence, an investor residing in Cebu for two years, expressed
remorse for the incident, attributing it to a mistake in form filling.
While he acknowledged his error, he contested the severity of the
punishment, advocating against a permanent ban.
The Philippines mandates all travellers to complete an e-travel card at least 72 hours before their arrival and departure.
Laurence's case is among 44 instances in 2023 where tourists faced entry bans due to mistreatment of immigration officers.
